More protein is great — but only if your body can break it down and absorb it. Our nutritionist, Dr. Len Lopez, explains the first rule of eating right.
From our nutritionist, Dr. Len Lopez.
More protein is everywhere right now — in shakes, bars, and on every plate. And if you’re eating more protein, that’s fantastic. But Dr. Len asks a bigger question: are you actually digesting it, and are you absorbing it?
Eating It Isn’t the Same as Using It
Protein only helps you if your body can break it down and pull out the important micro- and macronutrients inside it. That extra protein could be very, very beneficial for you, for a wide range of health concerns — but only if your body can put it to work.
Rule #1: Do No Harm to Your Tummy
As Dr. Len puts it, the first rule of eating right is do no harm to your tummy. If you get bloated, gassy, “poopy, squirty,” or sleepy after a meal, that’s a sign your body didn’t dig what you put in there.
Those signals are worth listening to. They’re your body telling you something in the meal — or the way you ate it — isn’t working for you.
What You’re Eating, or How You’re Eating?
Once you notice those signs, the next step is figuring out the cause. Is it what you’re eating, or how you’re eating? The answer is different for everyone — which is exactly why a one-size-fits-all protein plan often falls short.
Get a Plan Built Around You
Dr. Len’s approach looks at the bigger picture — nutrition, fitness, lifestyle, stress, metabolism, and everyday habits — to find what may be keeping you from your goals. If you’re eating more protein but not feeling the difference, a consultation with Dr. Len is a great place to start.
